BIO

Some people chase dreams, while others live them. Dex Lauper chose to live his dream. Instead of jumping from party to party the 18-year-old rapper, singer, producer, and performer would often be found locked in the studio  hours at a time—often even sleeping and showering there.

                                                                                                                         —

Collaborating alongside top producers such as Reazy Renegade, Avenue, Anthony Pisano, who have worked with industry greats like   [Rick Ross, Future, DJ Khaled, Drake, T.I.], and others the New York native honed a slick, signature style, merging booming trap, upbeat melodies, clever wordplay, and chilled-out soul.

                                                                                                                         —

“I wanted to have at least a hundred records ready,” he smiles. “I found a sound, and I kept expanding it almost 24/7. The engineers would go home to rest and get cleaned up, while I’d take a quick nap and get right back at it. If I was going to do this; I was going to devote myself one-hundred percent.”

That’s exactly what he did, and that devotion defines his independent debut, As Life Goes On (#ALGO). Inspired by everything from West Coast pioneers such as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and Nate Dogg to modern New York luminaries like 50 Cent and A$AP Rocky, he brings his own flavor to hip-hop.

                                                                                                                        —

“There’s an uplifting vibe,” he goes on. “It’s about giving people an emotional escape and something positive to latch on to.”

                                                                                                                        —

His first official single “Wavy” weaves in and out of woozy 808s with an unforgettable chant.

“Lyrically, it’s about how you’ve got your mood set,” he says. “You decide you’re going to get something done, and you just do it. That’s what ‘Wavy’ is. It doesn’t matter if your teachers, peers, or anybody doubts you. You go out and do you.”

                                                                                                                      —

At the age of 3, Dex recalls singing AC/DC songs on his mom Cyndi’s tour bus to a crowd of beaming crew and band members. As he got older, he went from playing along to the shows with drum sticks (always flicking his wrist and playing even if a stick broke) to grabbing the microphone and amping up sold out audiences around the country. During high school, he picked up hockey, but an injury sidelined his progress. Music bubbled into the foreground at that point.

                                                                                                                      —

“I got my G.E.D., so I could spend all my time in the studio,” he continues. “It was all about getting that craft down.”

As Life Goes On is the first step. It brings everything full circle with the rousing energetic club bounce of “Plug”produced by John Fifth and a hypnotic duet with mom entitled “New Day.”

                                                                                                                        —

Ultimately, this project sees him moving full speed ahead, while living this dream out loud.

“When you listen to ALGO, I hope it gives you motivation to find your inspiration and what brings you happiness,” he leaves off. “As life moves on, you have to act and react in motion. That’s what I learned while making this. I want to share it.”
